Workshop
Schaerding, Austria, 20 - 23 May 1997
Sponsoring Organisations
International
Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) - Working
Group 13.1
on Education in HCI and HCI Curricula
in cooperation with the European
Association of Cognitive Ergonomics (EACE),
Oesterreichische Computer Gesellschaft
(OCG),
and Johannes-Kepler-Universität
Linz, Institut für Informatik
The workshop aims at the development of generic components for curricula in Higher Education (Universities, Polytechnics etc.) for the design of Human Computer Interaction, Multimedia and Collaborative Systems. The modules will be subject to an adaption process, in which they are tailored to different educational situations, cultures, and levels of degrees of various study tracks.
Investigation of present curricula and course material, derivation of generic course components, recommendation of methods how to tailor the components to a specific educational situation.
The workshop is directed towards HCI educators in Higher Education. It will integrate the efforts of education in HCI for the design of Interactive Systems, especially Multimedia and Collaborative Systems in the subject areas of Computer and Communication Sciences, Psychology, Communication Design, Graphics Design, Industrial Design, etc.
Proceedings with the results from the workshop, to be published by end of 1997.
The invitation for participation will involve a two-step procedure:
If you have an interest in participating in the workshop we ask that you please send a one page statement to Peter Gorny, at the address given below, before 31 January, 1997. This will help us to assess the potential number of position papers and size of this workshop. In the statement, please describe for us:

Expected Pre-Conference activities of participants
The workshop aims at the development of a VISION of the "ideal" way to teach the design of interactive systems. We want to jointly approach what is really needed to teach successful design of interactive systems. Beyond the burden of different organisational contexts and constraints the future of teaching will be envisioned. In our following discussions we will hopefully derive recommendations for various educational settings.
Please help us to prepare the workshop by following this "action plan":
1. Position Papers
Some of the participants have not yet sent their position paper. Please hurry, so the organizers can prepare the workshop appropriately.
2. Initial Workshop Vision Statement
As the first step in thinking towards the vision of the "ideal" way of teaching please prepare ONE (and only one) transparency (font Helvetica; size 24 point) to answer the question:
"What is in your opinion the most important issue in future teaching of the design of interactive systems ?"
You will get 5 minutes at the workshop to present this transparancy and talk about your most important issue.
In order to prepare the workshop please send a copy of your transparency (email with attached MS-Word file or fax) not later than Monday, 5 May, 1997 to
